I ran across this great blog a month or so ago that lists 12 reasons shopping locally helps a community. My favorite is "(11) Shopping locally keeps non-chain shops flourishing, thereby increasing the diversity of our communities. It helps them retain their uniqueness and authenticity and encourages local innovation and creativity. (Who wants to live in clone towns?)" since it coincides so well with our personal pro-historic preservation mantra of keeping the unique character of a place.
